The decoration of the Camera degli Sposi in the Doge's palace in Mantua is regarded as Mantegna's masterpiece. It was commissioned by the Gonzagas, with whom he served as court painter from 1459. In this rectangular room, Mantegna painted his own architectural reality in a complicated composition of arches, pedestals, pillars, heavy curtains and in the ceiling the famous "Oculus", an opening with a view of the painted sky. The fresco is one huge, fascinating trompe-l'oeil. "The inscription with putti" is painted on one of the walls above the door. The viewer sees the top cherubs from below, suggesting an extreme perspective of depth. |
